8/27/1994 at 7:58PM, Box 22 in the Village of Hudson Falls struck: "The Parkside Hotel, 138 Main St, Reported Working Fire." First arriving units found heavy smoke and fire showing from the rear of the structure, crews were deployed to combat the fire and search the luminous 3-Story 45 room building for any remaining occupants.
Firefighter Paul A. MacMurray, an 11 year veteran, who left his daughters birthday party to respond to the alarm was assigned to a search and rescue crew. While performing a primary search and after having successfully removed several occupants a flashover occurred, separating Paul and his partner.
Despite the valiant efforts of his brother firefighters, attempts to rescue Firefighter MacMurray were unsuccessful. An interior attack was abandoned and a defensive mode was initiated. The fire raged on during the night with the building eventually collapsing into itself.
At 6:30pm on Sunday August 28th, 1994 our radios echoed the phrase "the sky is blue". That was the code that we finally found our brother Paul.
Paul's belongings from that day are sealed in a memorial in our station today and everyday. A stern reminder of the sacrifice he made. Paul still rides the trucks on every call, watching over our firefighters on every alarm. Rest easy Paul. We have the watch.
